2nd grade math · Unit 2: Even, odd, and equal groups

Even or odd?

What this lesson shows

Pair up 9 counters: 4 pairs and 1 left over, so 9 = 4 + 4 + 1 is odd. 8 = 4 + 4 is even.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 9. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Pair them up
  2. Two equal rows
  3. One left over: odd
  4. All paired: even

Helping at home

Draw the counters in pairs, one on top of its partner. If every counter has a partner, the number is even. If one is left over, it is odd. Write it as two equal parts, plus 1 if one is left.

If your kid gets stuck

Does every counter have a partner?
