2nd grade math · Unit 6: Money

Deposits and withdrawals

What this lesson shows

An account holds $20. A deposit of $8 makes $28; a withdrawal of $5 leaves $23. Tell which puts money in and which takes it out.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: $20, deposit $8, withdraw $5. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Deposit: money in, add
  2. Withdrawal: money out, subtract
  3. Keep the new amount each time

Helping at home

Read each problem aloud. Ask: does this put money in or take it out? Your kid adds a deposit, then subtracts a withdrawal from the new amount.

If your kid gets stuck

In: add. Out: subtract.
