1st grade math · Unit 6: Length

Which holds more, which is heavier

What this lesson shows

Two jars filled with scoops: the one that takes more scoops holds more. A balance tips down on the heavier side, and cubes on the other side show how heavy.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: A tall jar and a wide jar. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Fill with the same scoop
  2. More scoops holds more
  3. The side that goes down is heavier
  4. More cubes is heavier

Helping at home

Fill two cups or bowls with the same spoon and count the spoonfuls: more spoonfuls holds more. Then hold two things, one in each hand, and check on a balance or a hanger: the side that goes down is heavier.

If your kid gets stuck

More scoops holds more. More cubes is heavier.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
