1st grade math · Unit 6: Length

Inches and centimeters don’t mix

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

A 6-inch pencil is longer than a 10-centimeter crayon. The bigger number is not always longer.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 6 in and 10 cm. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Look at the units
  2. Measure from 0
  3. An inch is bigger

Helping at home

Only compare numbers in the same unit. An inch is bigger than a centimeter, so put both on rulers from 0, or measure both in one unit.

If your kid gets stuck

Are they in the same unit?
