5th grade math · Unit 6: The coordinate plane and patterns

A rule as an expression

What this lesson shows

9, 13, 17, 21 adds 4 each time: 4n + 5, so the 16th term is 69.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: Start at 9, add 4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Find the step
  2. Compare with the times table
  3. Write the rule, and check it

Helping at home

Find what the pattern adds each time. Compare each term with that number times its term number; what is left over is the same for every term. Write it as a rule, like 4n + 5, check it on a term, then use it for a far term.

If your kid gets stuck

What does it add each time? Times the term number, plus what?

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 5.OA.B.3
Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from the two patterns, and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. For example, given the rule "Add 3" and the starting number 0, and given the rule "Add 6" and the starting number 0, generate terms in the resulting sequences, and observe that the terms in one sequence are twice the corresponding terms in the other sequence. Explain informally why this is so.
