Expressions with a letter

What this lesson shows

5 more than a number is n + 5, 4 less than a number is n − 4, and 3 times a number is 3 × n. When n is 7, n + 5 is 12. The area formula A = l × w with l = 5 and w = 6 gives 30; an area of 24 with w = 4 gives l = 6.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 5 more than a number, when n = 7. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. A letter stands for the number
  2. Turn the words into signs
  3. Put the value in place of the letter

Helping at home

A letter, n, stands for the number. "More than" adds, "less than" takes away from n, and "times" multiplies. To find the value, put the given number in place of n and work it out.

If your kid gets stuck

Let n stand for the number. Then put in its value.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
