5th grade math · Unit 3: Multiplying whole numbers

Estimate each row

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

A second row with a carry never added: 26,680 is far from its estimate, 36,000. Estimate each row before adding.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 1,834 × 23. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Estimate each row
  2. Find the row that is far off
  3. Fix it, then add

Helping at home

Before adding the rows, estimate each one: the ones digit times the top number rounded to the nearest hundred, then the tens. A row far from its estimate has a slip; look for a carry never added.

If your kid gets stuck

Estimate each row before you add them.
