4th grade math · Unit 8: Angles, perimeter, and area

Area or perimeter?

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

Around the edge is perimeter. Covering the inside is area.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 9 by 6. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Ask: around or covering?
  2. Around: perimeter, feet
  3. Covering: area, square feet
  4. Then do the math

Helping at home

Before any math, ask: does the story go around the edge, or cover the inside? Fence, trim, and borders go around: that is perimeter, adding the sides, in feet. Grass, carpet, and tile cover: that is area, length times width, in square feet.

If your kid gets stuck

Around the edge, or covering the inside?

Standards

  • Common Core 4.MD.A.3
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
  • Common Core 3.MD.D.8
Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.
