3rd grade math · Unit 3: Place value to 10,000

Numbers to 10,000 three ways

What this lesson shows

2,530 in standard, expanded, and word form.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 2,530. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Each digit has a place
  2. Expanded: add what each is worth
  3. A 0 adds nothing
  4. Words: as you say it

Helping at home

Say each digit with its place first: 2 thousands, 5 hundreds, 3 tens. Expanded form adds what each digit is worth; leave out a 0, which adds nothing. Word form is written the way it is said, with a comma after the thousands.

If your kid gets stuck

Say each digit with its place first.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
