2nd grade math · Unit 10: Data

Measure, then plot

What this lesson shows

Measure six pencils to the nearest inch, then draw a line plot with one X above each length.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: Pencil lengths, in inches: 4, 6, 5, 4, 7, 4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Nearest inch
  2. Shortest to longest
  3. An X for each one
  4. Stack the repeats

Helping at home

A length a little past a mark goes to the closer whole inch. Find the shortest and the longest, and draw a number line from one to the other with a tick for every inch. Draw one X above each length, stacking it when the length comes again.

If your kid gets stuck

Find the shortest and the longest first.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
